Natalie McLaren, 20, from Falkirk, is here with her friend Nicola for the Arctic Monkeys gig – the music-lover got a free ticket but explained: “It’s kind of a sad story, my friend’s boyfriend broke up with her so I get to go instead. But I’m better to go with anyway!" She wears a floaty white dress from River Island that she said was “about a fiver in the sales,” a green waistcoat from Armstrongs Vintage Emporium in Edinburgh, some boots from another vintage shop in Glasgow, and carries a bag from Primark, topped off with a fedora hat. Her friend describes her “1960’s hippy” style as a “female version of Brian Jones” from the Rolling Stones.

Nicola Sharp, also from Falkirk in Scotland, is in town with her friend to watch the Arctic Monkeys gig at Finsbury Park. The 21-year-old, who currently works full time at a butchers, says she goes for a mod look with a lot of denim items thrown into the mix. She wears a white stripey top and brown boots from River Island, with a denim dress from Bank, and some shades from ASOS.

Becky Whyley-Smith, 26, said her outfit consists of “random bits and bobs” including a grey H&M dress brightened up with a red belt, and a Primark leather jacket and black shoes. The 26-year-old, who works as a librarian at Greenwich University, and whose dark hair is offset with a red flower and matching red lipstick, explains that she goes for a “1950’s pin-up, rockabilly” look. Her best style tip is: “Just be yourself and wear what you want.”

Anais Katan, 21, from France, is wearing a leather skirt and sunglasses from Primark, a printed crop top and a black bag from H&M, a coat from a thrift shop on eBay, Jeffrey Campbell boots, and a black bag from H&M. She has also accessorised with a choker around her neck. The sales advisor, who lives in east London, is out today for a drink in Camden Town. She says she dresses according to her mood.

Marc Shaw, a history student at UCL originally from Essex, explains that as he is a vegetarian and went for the cheapest non-leather shoes he could find… but adds: “That said, I am being kind of a hypocrite as I’m wearing a leather jacket, but it’s second-hand so it’s not too bad. I bought it in Covent Garden from a vintage shop and I found some weird pills in the pocket. I don’t know if it was owned by a drug dealer or something before, but I got rid of those sharpish as it was pretty scary!” The 23-year-old is also wearing a vintage striped shirt teamed with black Topman skinny jeans and a pair of shades from Camden market. The student, who now lives in the area, said: “I was slightly overwhelmed moving to London for my first year of study… you think it’s going to be this super cool place, and it is quite cool, but a tad overrated."

Hayley de la Motte works in model recruitment for the HOB Academy hairdressing group. Her own blonde hair is full of all-over highlights, and she says: “I’m really lucky, I’ve got some of the best hairdressers in England to do my hair for me. I don’t go for anything too fancy, just keep it long, and it’s naturally straight.” The 20-year-old, who grew up in Sydney but now lives in Holloway, is wearing boots from boohoo.com, matching shorts and a jacket from an Australian brand called Sportsgirl, an American Apparel turtleneck underneath, a bag from a thrift shop in Sydney and a black hat from an Australian department store. She says: “Brigitte Bardot is my style icon. Today I was going for a mod Brigitte crossed with the Beatles sort of look.”
